Bilingual Residential Domestic Violence Advocate

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is accountable to and under the direct supervision of the Shelter Program Director. The Shelter Bilingual Advocate is responsible for provision of crisis intervention, support and domestic violence education; administrative duties; and case management for monolingual Spanish speaking women and children and English speaking women in Shelter.

POSITION STATUS: Exempt, three-quarter time M-F days with one evening required. If needed, other nights or an occasional overnight or weekend shift may be required.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position functions as part of a team. Areas of responsibility may fluctuate or change. Other duties may be assigned depending on the needs of the organization. Specific duties shall include, but are not limited to:

1. Provide Case Management to Safe Shelter Clients
• Maintain a client caseload by providing intervention and continuing follow-up for Spanish speaking women while they are at shelter.
• Provide individual support; assist in development of an Action Plan, maintain progress notes, and provide client advocacy with a wide variety of community agencies.
• Provide Case management for monolingual Spanish speaking women and children who are residing in Shelter
• On a daily basis, assist clients with adjustment to Shelter living; respond to their needs for assistance and basic needs; and support clients in reaching goals.
• Share case management of adult residential woman with the Shelter Director.

2. Provide Safe Shelter Services:
• Provide Spanish/English interpreting on the phone and in person.
• Complete Shelter paperwork and statistical input.
• Answer phones; take crisis calls; provide advocacy, information, and referrals to callers; and screen shelter admissions.
• Carry the Spanish back-up line.
• Assist in Shelter program development specific to the needs of the Latina residents
• Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and team meetings.
• Exit clients, voluntary and involuntary, and refer clients to Outreach services as appropriate.
• Be available and accessible to clients.

3. Other Duties:
• Help maintain a safe and secure environment for all clients.
• Continually identify enhancements to service access and delivery
• Assist in creating and achieving goals and objectives as required by grants.
• Submit statistical data in an accurate and timely manner
• Provide public speaking and education to the community at large, as needed
• Assist in the training of new staff, volunteers, and interns, as requested
• Participate in fundraiser and special events preparation, assistance, and attendance throughout the year.
• Prepare rooms for new clients when necessary.
• Assist in Shelter maintenance and repair.
• Other duties as assigned.

General Qualifications:
• Knowledge and understanding of the physical, psychological, and sociological issues involved in domestic violence. 
• Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention, individual and group counseling.
• Speak, comprehend, read and write Spanish and English fluently
• Thorough understanding of Latino culture and issues related to Latina women and domestic violence.
• Computer skills -- familiar with Windows and Microsoft programs.
• Ability to regularly use discretion and independent thinking/decision making. 
• Work independently and as part of a team. 
• Must possess a valid driver's license and a telephone.

Educational Qualifications:
Degree in counseling or related field, plus a minimum of two years work experience in human service delivery programs or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
