Job description

The Advocacy Manager will work full time in Washington DC. S/he must have the ability to work independently, proactively, and strengthen WAW's office and activities in Washington DC. S/he will report to the Executive Director (based in NY and Afghanistan), support the general work and mission of WAW, and create partnerships with various government bodies and organizations in Washington DC and remotely in Afghanistan. S/he will lead advocacy matters in partnership with national activists for Afghanistan, especially when they affect Afghan women's rights. The Advocate will take on the following responsibilities and other duties as needed and directed by the Executive Director.
Advocacy:
  • Develop an international advocacy strategy in consultation with the ED. Strengthen partnerships with international organizations and NGOs in support of Afghan women's rights.
  • Establish / strengthen DC-based and Afghan advocacy group for Afghanistan.
  • Proactively take initiative to ensure participation (or attendance of Afghan women's rights activists) at key international meetings about policies in Afghanistan.
  • Represent with US government officials and other key stakeholders to inform and raise the profile of Afghan women's rights.
  • Take immediate action, with help from WAW's existing networks (and the networks she will establish in DC), when / if any policies threatens, undermines or sidelines the rights of Afghan women.
  • Work with Afghan civil society to help promote more Afghan women's rights defenders' voices in the U.S. policy debates and direct advocacy with the U.S. government. She will represent WAW and provide leadership on women's rights in networks such as the Alliance in Support of the Afghan People (ASAP).
  • Hold meetings for 'Friends of WAW' network in DC.
  • Keep informed on policy developments relating to Afghanistan, in particular those which will impact women's rights, and provide timely update to the ED.
Communications:
  • Write opinion editorials, press releases, advocacy statements and other advocacy materials to raise awareness and promote Afghan women's rights. Conduct interviews with the media where necessary and develop media relations in DC.
Networking and Community Outreach:
  • Build relationships with members of the DC-Virginia area Afghan community. She will conduct a needs assessment within DC-Virginia Afghan community regarding women's rights. Based on this needs assessment, WAW will decide if there is need for a women's center like our Queens Community Center.
Required Skills
  • BA required (MA preferred) in international relations or a related field plus two years of work experience;
  • Excellent communications skills (written and verbal) including ability to draft advocacy and media materials to a high standard in English;
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task in a one-person office, take initiative to assert advocacy agenda, possess the passion, energy and enthusiasm to advocate for and promote the rights of Afghan women;
  • First-class interpersonal, networking and public speaking skills, including the ability to interact with high-level policymakers and the media and to establish and maintain an international network of supporters of Afghan women's rights;
  • High levels of organization, efficiency, creativity and professionalism including the ability to work with minimal resources and independently;
  • Knowledge of the US and international policies towards Afghanistan particularly those concerning Afghan women's rights;
  • Experience working with the US Congress and government is a plus;
  • Additional languages such as Dari and Pashtu are desirable;
  • Willingness to travel, especially to NY and Afghanistan as needed.
