NARAL Pro-Choice America and NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation seek a Policy Aide for this dynamic, mission-driven organization that has been at the forefront of the fight for reproductive rights since its founding in 1968. NARAL has an annual budget of approximately $12 million and encompasses a 501 (c)(3), a 501 (c)(4), and a political action committee.
NARAL Pro-Choice America is the nation's leading advocate for reproductive freedom and protecting a woman's right to choose her own reproductive destiny. With more than one million members and supporters, NARAL Pro-Choice America is dedicated to mobilizing and building the base of pro-choice advocates, identifying and supporting pro-choice candidates, and advancing sound reproductive policies that support women and families at all stages of their reproductive life. These policies include preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
SUMMARY
Monitor choice-related policy issues at the federal and state levels. Perform policy analysis and research on choice-related proposals, draft a variety of advocacy materials, and contribute to significant policy publications. Under the supervision of the vice president, help represent and advance NARAL's policy views and goals to Congress, state affiliates, and other constituencies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Within assigned issue areas (in some cases working solely; in others, working as a team with a junior or senior colleague):
  • Track all relevant choice-related activity on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, and in state legislatures. Report developments to key staff as appropriate. Perform policy analysis on state and federal legislation, and, as assigned, advocate NARAL Pro-Choice America's views.
  • As directed, with issue teammates, craft and carry out legislative strategy.
  • Represent NARAL's policy views on Capitol Hill. As assigned, lobby and brief congressional staff through in-person meetings, written communications, and phone calls. Work mark-ups, hearings, and votes.
  • Assist state affiliates on key choice-related proposals with policy analysis and strategy recommendations.
  • Write, edit, and update fact sheets, talking points, letters to policymakers, staff memos, model legislation, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents.
  • Coordinate policy strategy and activities across NARAL as a whole to maximize benefits to the pro-choice movement and NARAL in particular.
  • As assigned, represent NARAL to progressive partners and coalitions.
  • Contribute to and help produce key publications, including Who Decides?, the annual voting record, fact sheets, and Policy Updates.
  • Edit copy from other departments.
  • Liaise with other departments or internal work groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four-year college degree.
  • Minimum three years professional experience, preferably in a related field, or relevant advanced degree may be substituted for some of the work experience.
  • Policy and/or direct lobbying experience at the state and/or national level.
  • Directly related experience in research and/or policy analysis.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to juggle multiple tasks and timelines simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Access, Excel, and other programs.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and workload-management skills, ability to work as a team with junior and senior colleagues, and ability to meet deadlines consistently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong orientation to detail, accuracy, and follow-through, with minimal supervision.
  • Professional, polished, diplomatic, and mature demeanor.
  • Knowledge of reproductive-health issues preferred.
  • Commitment to diversity and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences.
  • Clear understanding of, and commitment to, NARAL's mission and goals.
