Assistant or Associate Profession - Women's Spirituality Program

Posted on: February 12, 2015
Start date: July 1, 2015
Posted by: California Institute of Integral Studies

This is a half-time position
The Women's Spirituality program at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) announces a half-time position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, effective July 1, 2015.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
California Institute of Integral Studies is an accredited institution of higher education that strives to embody spirit, intellect, and wisdom in service to individuals, communities, and the Earth. The Women's Spirituality graduate program at CIIS offers a transdisciplinary feminist and womanist approach to the study of spirituality and religion. Our curriculum incorporates scholarship from women's/gender studies, ethnic studies, religious studies, philosophy, and other related fields. We offer two degrees: an MA in Women, Gender, Spirituality, and Social Justice (WGS) and a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Religion with a Concentration in Women's Spirituality (WSE). We are the first MA and PhD program in the nation to integrate a study of the sacred feminine with an examination of contemporary social, political, and ecological issues. Faculty and students meet together to generate innovative ways to combine rigorous academic scholarship with the passionate pursuit of personal transformation, community healing, and social justice.
Our program is committed to resisting and transforming hierarchical systems that have been constructed on the basis of gender, race, class, religious identity, gender identity, ability, and nationality. Students are invited to examine issues of power and privilege within both spiritual traditions and societal institutions. They are also invited to view social and ecological justice work as forms of sacred practice. While we have an emphasis on the historical, political, and spiritual experiences of individuals and groups characterized as "women," we also recognize and include the experiences of other marginalized genders in our curriculum. We explicitly acknowledge the difficulties that arise from heteronormativity and transphobia in diverse spiritual traditions, and from dual or binary gender systems. We welcome individuals of all sexualities, gender identities, and gender expressions.
Courses are delivered in flexible formats, which include weekday, weekend, evening, and online courses. In addition to our residential option, we offer a semi-distance option that allows students to take up to 49% of their coursework online.
POSITION DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Half-time CIIS core faculty members are responsible for teaching 9 units of graduate-level courses per year or their equivalent. Core faculty also advise students, serve on dissertation committees, and participate in CIIS faculty meetings and institutional committees. Core faculty are expected to stay engaged in academic production through publication, presenting at academic conferences, and other scholarly activities.
Because we are a relatively small program, all core faculty in the Women's Spirituality program are expected to contribute to administrative aspects of the program. The ideal candidate will have administrative experience in higher education and may be considered for the position of Program Chair when the position opens up. In addition, the candidate should have the ability to fill in for the current Chair during sabbaticals.
Candidates are to be conversant with current scholarship emerging from the fields of women's spirituality and women's studies and have research and teaching expertise in two or more of the following areas:
  • Multicultural feminist spiritualities (e.g. womanist theory, theology/thealogy, Goddess studies).
  • Contemporary feminist theory and its intersections with critical race theory, postcolonial and decolonial frameworks, and queer theory.
  • Africana/African Diasporic, Indigenous, Latina/Chicana, and/or Asian and Pacific Islander frameworks and spiritualities.
  • Ecofeminism, environmental justice, and related fields.
  • Sacred arts, healing, and ritual.
  • Women and world religions.
  • An additional area of expertise related to our field (e.g. feminist psychology, gender-based violence, mythology, modern matriarchal studies).
Candidates should ideally have a Ph.D., college- or graduate-level face-to-face and online teaching experience, a record of publication, and expertise in the areas listed above. In addition, candidates should have experience teaching in a multicultural classroom (40%-50% of our students identify as people of color), strong facilitation skills, and a commitment to feminist pedagogy. Expertise in one or more methods of transformative dialogue (e.g. restorative justice, non-violent communication, or intergroup dialogue) would be particularly valuable.
Materials will be reviewed until the position is filled.
