Research Coordinator

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), a US based, non-profit research organization, seeks a Research Coordinator to oversee a portfolio of projects in Liberia.

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) discovers and promotes effective solutions to global poverty problems. IPA designs, rigorously evaluates, and refines these solutions and their applications together with decision-makers to ensure that the evidence created is used to improve opportunities for the world’s poor. Since our founding in 2002, IPA has worked with over 350 leading academics to conduct over 450 evaluations in 51 countries. This research has informed hundreds of successful programs that now impact millions of individuals worldwide.
Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), a US based, non-profit research organization, seeks aResearch Coordinator to oversee a portfolio of projects in Liberia. IPA works with development partners and academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches to solving development problems, to communicate what works and does not work in development and to scale up successful projects in a variety of fields, including microfinance, agriculture, education and health.
Position Summary: 
Over the life of the position, the Research Coordinator will manage a portfolio of up to four projects, including intensive support to some projects. These projects will include both evaluation and implementation components. They could span a range of technical areas, such as agriculture, health, education and gender issues. As part of their supervisory role, the Research Coordinator will act as the IPA Sierra Leone & Liberia Country Director’s senior management representative in Liberia and work closely with the country office to ensure effective support is being given to projects, and projects are working within the relevant policies and procedures.
For an initial period of 5 months the Research Coordinator will provide intensive support to an evaluation of “Girl Empower”, an intervention that addresses multiple aspects of girls’ lives to ensure the whole girl is supported and focuses on building the assets of adolescent girls. Activities within Girl Empower include building girls’ economic skills and social capital, developing safe and supportive households, and providing access to quality health and psychosocial care. IPA, in partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the Population Council, will conduct a rigorous evaluation of the intervention in Ganta Liberia.
The Research Coordinator will work closely with the lead researchers and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to: overseeing several project staff, pilot survey questionnaires, coordinate with the IRC to ensure the roll-out of the program adheres to the research design,  refine study design and surveying instruments, managing survey teams, check and analyze data coming in from the field, clean data and assist in preliminary analysis, assist in the writing of project reports and policy memos, coordinate with the researchers and the IPA Sierra Leone/Liberia Country director on all aspects of the project.
This position will be based in Monrovia, Liberia, with occasional travel to our office in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Responsibilities: 
The Research Coordinator will: 
  • Keep the Country Director appraised of all developments on the projects in their portfolio, and serve as key link between the field office, project staff, and Principle Investigators
  • Be the first point of contact for data management and analysis support
  • Ensure project adherence in the field to general research design, sample selection, data management and analysis, and overall project management
  • Oversee project financial management, including creation and monitoring of program budgets, and ensuring smooth integration of projects into IPA financial systems
  • Work with field office staff to ensure sound human resource and operational management of projects
  • Directly supervise project research staff (Research Associates and Field Managers), and help with transitions, on-boarding of new research staff and maintaining “institutional memory” of project activities
  • Ensure that project deliverables, such as reports and financial statements, are submitted to donors and partners on time
  • Lead training on data management and general project management for new/incoming project research staff
  • Promote inter-project best practices and take a lead in sharing best practices with projects through formal and informal training opportunities
  • Support the dissemination of results via presentations and reports to academic and non-academic audiences
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • Strong BA in development economics, or a field related to international development, such as public policy, global health or education. Masters in these fields is a preferred
  • Extensive experience conducting social science or economic field research. Background in randomized control trials is strongly preferred
  • Extensive experience with data management, econometrics, and applied statistics
  • At least two years of project management experience
  • Extensive experience supervising data collection, teams of field workers, and survey design and implementation
  • Advanced knowledge of Stata or any statistical packages preferably SPSS and or CSPro
  • Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies required
  • Experience in conducting field research in developing countries required
  • Strong budgeting and financial management skills
  • Experience with presenting research findings at public forums, including to non-research focused audiences, is preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and complete fluency in English is required
  • Strong quantitative skills and familiarity with randomized controlled trials
