Advocacy Adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean

Job description

The Center seeks an Advocacy Adviser who will work under the supervision of the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and closely with other program staff to support and build the work of the program.
The position will be based in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
Primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Legal and policy analysis of a variety of reproductive rights issues;
  • Legal and policy research on international human rights law and standards;
  • Supporting the design and implementation of advocacy strategies before the Organization of American States (OAS), including drafting memos, advocacy documents and thematic submissions for OAS bodies;
  • Developing strategy for and drafting reproductive rights submissions to the OAS;
  • Supporting the drafting of publications and other materials to advance program work;
  • Working in coordination with staff from the Global Legal Program and other programs, and in collaboration with civil society organizations, academics and other external stakeholders, to further advocacy aims;
  • Representing the Center before OAS bodies and organizing briefings and other events with OAS agencies and other bodies;
  • Supporting the Regional Director in providing technical assistance to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders;
  • Representing the Center externally on matters related to reproductive rights through public speaking, and as required, through engagement with the media;
  • Supporting the Center's communication strategies by drafting blogs, op-eds and other documents to position reproductive rights;
  • Supporting the Regional Director in preparing presentations for conferences and meetings;
  • Helping identify, build and maintain partnerships with NGOs, and with key stakeholders, as needed;
  • Assisting the Regional Manager with the supervision of interns, volunteers and pro bono lawyers;
  • International travel is required.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Strong commitment to the Center's mission, purpose, and values
  • Knowledge of international human rights, women's rights and OAS human rights system
  • Capable of complex legal analytical work
  • Advocacy experience, including as part of NGO coalitions
  • Excellent writing, editing, research and oral advocacy skills
  • Very detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively, to multi-task, and to work under pressure
  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • Degree in law (Juris Doctor or postgraduate) required
  • Minimum 3-4 years related professional experience
